Humulin N (NPH) is an injectable medication that contains Insulin Human Recombinant, which is widely utilized in medicine, particularly for regulating blood glucose in diabetic patients. This medication was first developed in the late 1970s and is classified as an intermediate-acting insulin, meaning it acts more gradually and has a longer duration of action compared to regular insulin. Humulin N is manufactured by combining synthetic insulin (which is identical to natural human insulin) with specific chemicals to extend its effects. NPH stands for Neutral Protamine Hagedorn. Humulin N NPH is available in boxes, each containing 5 cartridges of 3 mL (100 IU/mL).

For bodybuilders and athletes, insulin is considered the most anabolic hormone. However, it is also one of the most perilous hormones, and its administration requires a strict dietary regimen and accurate dosing. Humulin N NPH plays several critical roles, including blood sugar control. Insulin aids the body’s cells by removing sugar from the bloodstream, which provides energy necessary for their proper functioning. Additionally, Humulin regulates glycogen metabolism. With its anabolic properties, this medication promotes the transport of glycogen and amino acids within muscle and other tissues, and it also enhances protein anabolism.

Humulin NPH (Insulin) achieves its maximum effectiveness in lowering blood glucose levels 2-8 hours after administration. It is known to remain active for approximately 20 hours. If used on its own, it should be injected 1-2 times per day. For athletes and bodybuilders, it is crucial to start with lower doses and gradually increase them. Humulin N is frequently combined with rapid-acting or short-acting insulin to help manage blood sugar levels post-meal.

A sample dosage schedule could be: day 1: 5 IU post workout, day 2: 6 IU post workout, day 3: 7 IU post workout, and so forth, ultimately reaching 10 IU in the morning and 10 IU post workout by day 8-10. This dosage increase should only be undertaken by experienced bodybuilders with extreme caution, as it can result in severe consequences.

A major side effect of Humulin N is the risk of blood sugar dropping too low, potentially leading to hypoglycemia. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include headache, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, nausea, hunger, confusion, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, or difficulty concentrating. Other side effects may involve allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Given the risks associated with this compound, individuals should consult a physician at the first sign of adverse effects or if they wish to increase their dosage.
